The opening ceremony of the third edition of the Media Fair in Mali took place on May 31. During this meeting, the Malian authorities insisted on the need to fight fake news within the country. In order to achieve this objective, it is essential to mobilize local communities. This is why the United Nations (UN) in Mali launched a weekly program on Mikado FM. The involvement of influencers and young bloggers aims to minimize the scope of local disinformation.

Fact-checking on the continent
While Mali strives to contain the spread of false information on its territory, other African nations have already started this fight well. The growing influence of social networks has resulted in a decrease in society's tolerance and an increased tendency to accept misleading information. According to Africacenter, 77 % Interviewed people say they are more likely to believe in false information.

In November 2015, Africa Check was born in Dakar . The organization quickly established itself as a key player to ensure the proper functioning of the information system on a continental scale, thanks to its dynamism and its commitment. In partnership with the media, it is a label for credibility and recognition for its content and its distribution channels. Recognized experts in their field in Africa, their network of offices extends from Kenya to Nigeria, including Senegal and South Africa.

Local initiatives in action
To cope with these campaigns in the country, a group of journalists founded Malicheck .

In Mopti, the creation of Mopti Check is the work of local journalists , to fight against false information in the region. In order to meet the needs of citizens, he undertakes to guarantee the accuracy of the information and to carry out the analysis of the productions using their verification tools as well as open source techniques (OSINT).

Among the most notable initiatives, it is possible to quote #BenBereVif launched the Benbere media .

The project was created in 2019 by the Mali Bloggers Community ( Doniblog ).
It greatly contributes to the fight against false information and the efforts of social cohesion in a country disturbed by political instability.

The proliferation of media materials and the speed of the dissemination of news are factors that significantly hinder the fight against disinformation. To be able to face effectively, the various organizations and governments are faced with the same problem: funding. The lack of financial capacity prevents development, purchase of equipment and the recruitment of staff to act. Due to an extremely worrying poverty rate that continues to increase, Mali is faced with important obstacles in this battle.
Today, leading this battlestone in an individual way seems difficult or even impossible.
